GGN & ZfM Summer Event: Networking, Research, and a Glimpse into the Future of AI

On June 26, 2025, the Giessen Graduate Center for Natural Sciences and Psychology (GGN) and the Center for Materials Research (ZfM) of Justus Liebig University Giessen celebrated their joint summer event. In addition to university members, companies from Mittelhessen were invited to foster exchange between research, industry, and young talents.

The event began with a warm welcome by Prof. Dr. Wencke Gwozdz, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies at JLU. Afterwards, the GGN Managing Director Prof. Dr. Peter Klar presented the annual report of the GGN and introduced the joint activities of GGN and ZfM.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of the GGN Early Career Awards to three outstanding early-career researchers. On behalf of the GGN and the award committee, Prof. Dr. Sangam Chatterjee announced the winners: Christoph Alt, Dr. Till Fuchs, and Dr. Lu-Chun Yeh. The awardees then took the stage to present their impressive research projects to the audience.

The key focus of the afternoon was on the topic of Artificial Intelligence. In her engaging keynote talk “Shaping the Future with AI,” Sarah Lewandowski, expert in digitalization and AI, provided fascinating insights into future developments.

In the following panel discussion on “AI and Innovation,” experts from research and industry explored innovations across a wide range of fields:

  • Dr. Anja Bielefeld, Center for Materials Research, JLU
  • Prof. Roland Fleming, Ph.D., Experimental Psychology, JLU
  • Prof. Dr. Sascha Hauke, Applied Computer Science, JLU
  • Dr. Franz Hey, Chief Technical Officer, LEOspace Friedrichshafen
  • Sarah Lewandowski, Expert for Digitalization and AI

The summer event provided ample space for exchange among the approximately 140 guests from the natural science faculties of JLU, representatives from industry, and members of JLU’s graduate support services. TransMIT GmbH and TeamMit supported the event with a cake buffet and cold beverages. The evening concluded with a finger food reception, offering guests the opportunity to continue conversations, establish new contacts, strengthen existing ones, and reflect on the day’s insights.
