Guide to Peer Observation
Peer observation is a central element of the Tutor Qualification Programme at JLU Giessen. By visiting and observing tutorials, tutors can gain valuable practical experience and develop a deeper awareness of their own strengths and areas for development in teaching. There are two formats of observation: in peer observation, two tutors visit each other’s sessions; in expert observation, an experienced lecturer attends the tutorial.
Practice Coaching Guide
The “Practice Coaching” at JLU Giessen is based on the method of “Collegial Practice Consultation.” In this format, groups of tutors come together to identify and discuss emerging challenges from their teaching practice. First, current issues are collected and one case is selected. The selected case is then described in detail, followed by a question phase to clarify the situation. Hypotheses about possible causes are formulated, and in a discussion round, potential solutions are developed. At the end, the tutor who presented the case provides feedback on the proposed solutions and insights gained.
Toolkit for Tutors
The “Toolkit for Tutors” is a practical collection of teaching methods designed to support tutors in making their sessions both productive and varied. The document provides a range of strategies and techniques to enhance the learning process and foster student engagement.
Formulating Learning Objectives
Formulating teaching and learning objectives in courses is essential, as they provide clarity and direction for the entire educational process. They serve as a guiding compass for lecturers when structuring content and methods, and they help students understand the purpose and benefit of their learning, thereby increasing motivation. Clearly defined objectives also provide a solid foundation for assessment and feedback, contributing to quality assurance and the continuous improvement of courses. By communicating learning objectives transparently from the outset, misunderstandings can be avoided and a shared understanding between teachers and students can be established, enhancing the effectiveness of the overall teaching process.
Session Plan
A session plan for course planning provides a structured overview of the planned content and activities. It helps to use time effectively, ensures that all key topics are covered, and supports a coherent and comprehensible learning process for students.
Portfolio and Reflection
A learning diary and reflective practice are essential tools for effective learning. They deepen understanding by anchoring knowledge in memory and linking theoretical concepts with practical experience. By documenting progress and challenges, learners not only build confidence but also develop a clearer awareness of their strengths and areas for growth. This fosters critical thinking and encourages metacognition, reflection on one’s own learning process. A learning diary can also support emotional processing, help overcome learning barriers, and contribute to the continuous improvement of one’s learning strategies. Overall, these practices help learners realise their full individual learning potential.
AI Prompting
Prompting forms the foundation for the effective use of AI models. Well-formulated prompts enable responses that meet users’ specific needs. A precise prompt helps the AI process requests more accurately and provide relevant answers. Especially in research, education, and professional contexts, effective prompting supports the efficient and responsible use of AI tools.
