What is Peer Mentoring?

Peer Mentoring is a form of career advancement which focusses on self-organisation, networking and mutual support of junior scientists of a similar status. Based on self-initiative and on an interdisciplinary basis, they join forces to form peer mentoring groups in order to create a common network connecting people and/or institutions and in order to achieve, through appropriate measures, qualifications which are decisive for a career development.

Financial Support of Peer Mentoring Groups

A peer mentoring group is financially supported with up to and around 3000 €/year. Further information concerning the respective application phase of the coming year are announced towards the beginning of the new year.

Who can I apply?

All those doing their doctorate or habilitating at the JLU can team up in a peer mentoring group and apply. Already existing peer mentoring groups can also apply. The prerequisite is that the GGS peer mentoring groups’ primary aim is for their members to support each other and to improve the compatibility of family and career.

When groups are created, the following criteria need to be fulfilled with regards to their eligibility for support:

  • At least 50 % of the group is made up of female members. At least 50 % of the group’s leadership is also made up of female members.
  • The group composition is interdisciplinary. At least 50 % of the group consists of doctoral students or people habilitating at the faculties of Social and Economic Sciences and Law.
  • The group composition can be homogenous as far as the degrees are concerned (only doctoral students or only graduates who are working on their habilitation), but may also transcend those degrees.
  • We would especially like to encourage junior scientists who have an obligation to take care of their children or parents to become members of a peer mentoring group.

Each peer mentoring group has an academic advisory board, which consists of two to three professors. At least one member of the advisory board also has to be a member of a faculty of the JLU. It is the function of said advisory boards to aid and support the peer mentoring group if need be.

Each peer mentoring group formulates aims which its members want to reach in cooperation during the project phase. Based on these targets, the groups work out a custom-made action plan which is meant to help in achieving said aims. Measures taken in order to reach the aims are organised and carried out autonomously by each group.

How are Peer Mentoring Groups founded?

Peer mentoring groups are founded autonomously by junior scientists keen on doing so, because they would like to deal, in cooperation with like-minded colleagues, with the planning of their careers in an active and reflective manner.

  • Is the explanation on how to judge the chances of success of the action plan conclusive?
