Research infrastructre iFZ
Infrastructure development plays a key role in determining which resources will be available for future research. The continuous refurbishment of the iFZ complex has long since begun. The guiding principle for this transformation is the overall concept of sustainable university development. The technical infrastructure is being optimized in terms of energy efficiency, for example by converting to energy-saving LED lights. In order to shorten distances, experimental facilities such as the new plant research facility are being relocated directly to the campus. Most recently, a pilot plant for the sustainable production of shrimp was established in the iFZ Biotechnikum in 2023.

The transition to a more sustainable food production makes it necessary to increasingly develop new, sustainable cultivation systems. To this end, an iFZ research group, together with the Technical University Mittelhessen and the Fraunhofer IME, has developed a modular cultivation system for the coupled production of insects, tropical marine animals and terrestrial plants that can be operated in existing buildings.
