Appeal for donations for students, researchers and teachers from Ukraine

January 4, 2023

Eleven months after the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, people in the country are suffering not only from personal losses and supply shortages, but also from the consequences of the massive destruction of infrastructure. Serhiy Kvit, President of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA), JLU's partner university in Kyiv, has therefore turned to Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) with a specific request for financial support. As part of the "ESvitlo" project, the partners at NaUKMA want to set up several coworking spaces for staff, lecturers and students with independent power supply units to ensure that the university can continue to operate during periods of prolonged power outages.

On this occasion, JLU is once again calling for donations to support the relief fund for students, researchers and lecturers from Ukraine, which was set up last year.

Over the next two months, the donations received by the relief fund will go directly to the "ESvitlo" project so that the partners at NaUKMA in Kyiv can set up an independent power supply system. This system should ensure that the newly established coworking spaces can be used by up to 250 people per day. According to NaUKMA estimates, the costs amount to around 20,500 US dollars per unit.

In this context, JLU President Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee would once again like to thank all donors who have supported students, researchers and teachers from Ukraine in recent months. He would also like to thank the Giessen University Society, which very quickly and unbureaucratically agreed to support the students from Ukraine. At the same time, the President sees the great joint commitment of members, relatives and friends of JLU as a "great sign of hope".

Donations to the university are tax-deductible. Upon request, JLU will issue donors with a donation receipt.

Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) is calling for donations to support the newly established relief fund for students, researchers and teaching staff from Ukraine. "In view of the great demand, it is already foreseeable after a few days that the basic amount of 100,000 euros, which the Presidential Board had made available from freely available funds, will not last long," explained JLU President Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee and added: "We would like to provide sustainable help to the Ukrainians who are fleeing to Giessen because of their connections to JLU. We are also dependent on donations." The three universities in the Central Hesse Research Campus launched a joint relief fund last week.

In this context, the JLU President warmly thanked the Giessen University Society, which had very quickly and unbureaucratically agreed to support the students from Ukraine. This commitment is exemplary for many other actions in which the members and relatives of JLU have shown their great willingness to help in the face of the catastrophic situation. "These days we are hearing about numerous decentralized support campaigns for the people from Ukraine," the President emphasized. "Many are also offering us their help of their own accord. For me, that is a sign of hope."

Despite the impressive solidarity, the JLU Presidential Board does not believe that personal initiatives and donations alone will be enough: "We need a federally funded aid program for German universities in the near future in order to overcome the major challenges of the coming weeks and months," emphasized Prof. Mukherjee.
