Postgraduate Scholarship of the JLU

Funding Goal


As a part of its own university support program, Justus Liebig University anually awards postgraduate scholarships to national and international outstanding young researchers from all disciplines. The scholarships are awarded in accordance with JLU’s Statutes on Awarding the Postgraduate Scholarship. The awarding is subject to the availability of appropriate funding for the JLU.
JLU strives for a higher percentage of women in the academic field, therefore women are especially encouraged to apply for a scholarship.

Eligibility


The following requirements must be met at the time of application:

  • Completion of a university degree that allows admission to doctoral studies.
  • Above-average study and examination results
  • A special aptitude for scientific work
  • Compliance with the Statutes on Ensuring Good Scientific Practice
  • The doctoral project makes an important and outstanding contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the scholar’s field of study.
  • At the time of application, there has been no preliminary work on a larger scale regarding the doctoral project.

Funding Scope

 
The amount of the doctoral scholarship is 1,200€ per month plus 150€ monthly material and travel allowance (as well as other supplements, if applicable) over a standard funding period of 3 years.

Application process


Your application for a graduate scholarship from Justus Liebig University Giessen must include the following documents:

  1. Fully completed and signed application form

  2. All degree certificates* in uncertified form; foreign certificates require an English translation. If documents are not yet available, a certificate of the responsible examination office about the examination results

  3. Letter of acceptance issued by the doctoral committee of the corresponding faculty, about the acceptance as a doctoral candidate or the confirmation of the fulfillment of the admission requirements for the doctorate*.

  4. Project plan in the sense of a project description for the doctorate consisting of abstract, work plan and time schedule, as well as a declaration of independence

  5. Curriculum vitae

  6. Statement of the supervising university teacher.  (see also the letter from the Presidential Board to the supervisor) plus the declarations required according to §12 para. 1 of the above-mentioned statutes.

*If these documents are not (in full) available at the time of application, they can be submitted as late as 31.12.2024.


The following requirements must be observed when submitting the application:

  • The aforementioned documents must be received in digital form in the aforementioned order as one bundled document (PDF) by the application deadline of September 27, 2024 (by midnight) at forschung@uni-giessen.de.
  • It is mandatory that the dean's office responsible for your project  and the supervising professor be in CC.

  • Please indicate "Application JLU Graduate Scholarship 2024" as the subject line.

Funding process

 

The Graduate Funding Selection Committee decides on the applications on hand at its annual committee meeting. You will be notified in writing of the decision on your application.
The funding start date can be from the month of the award meeting (usually in January/February) to the first of each month up to six months after the funding decision. The start date is determined by the grant recipient within this time window. Accordingly, the latest start dates are either June 1, 2025 or July 1, 2025. The fellowship is initially awarded for one year and then renewed based on successfully evaluated interim reports. The maximum fellowship duration is 3 years.
