Postdocs

Postdocs at JLU benefit from structured programs, career counseling, financial support, and publication funding – for a successful academic career.

The postdoc phase is an intensive phase of personal and academic development and qualification. Early career researchers gain further methodological and professional qualifications, develop a research program or profile and network (inter)nationally in order to expand their academic independence. In the sense of increasing personal responsibility, researchers plan their further career path, including the acquisition of third-party funding. A hallmark of this phase is mobility, which enables researchers to make a name for themselves academically in an international environment.

Research funding

With the increasing importance of third-party funding for a successful academic career, it is becoming increasingly important for postdocs to deal with the planning of third-party funded projects and the acquisition of external funding at an early stage. In addition to specialist advice from the supervising professorship, Science Support offers postdocs practical administrative application support and advice on developing their own third-party funding strategy as part of their individual career planning.

External funding

You can find initial information on funding opportunities (personal, project, mobility funding) on the "Young Researchers" funding wallpaper. You can find an overview of prominent funding lines from the DFG, federal government, state, EU and foundations on our page on funding providers.

The funding wallpaper lists the most important funding lines by career phase and thus provides an overview of calls and deadlines that may be relevant for the respective career stage.

Internal funding

At JLU there are further funding instruments for postdocs, which are managed by different departments.

  • Just'us: The postdoctoral program Just'us (Junior Science and Teaching Units) awards scholarships to outstanding internal and external junior scientists up to one (internal applicants) or two years (external applicants) after their doctorate, based on the recommendation of a professor. The aim of the two-year funding is to develop an independent research program and to obtain outstanding external postdoctoral funding (e.g. DFG Emmy Noether Program).
  • Research grants: Early career researchers in Departments 1-10 at JLU can apply for start-up funding in the form of research grants for promising externally funded projects. The research grant is funding to complete necessary preliminary work (e.g. data collections, experiments, research, etc.) that has already been started within a reasonable period of time as a basis for submitting an application for an innovative externally funded project.
  • Start up funding for physicians: Members of Faculty 11 have the opportunity to apply for research funding in accordance with Section 2 (3) KoopV. This is start-up funding with the aim of enabling young researchers in particular to independently acquire grants from the DFG.
  • Fund of the Office for Equal Opportunities (BfC):

The BfC supports postdocs and tenure track professorships with childcare responsibilities in the form of travel funds for business trips with children, the fund for subsidizing additional childcare costs, and the auxiliary staff fund. The BfC's transitional scholarships are aimed at female doctoral and postdoctoral researchers whose externally funded projects are coming to an end. They are used to complete research or qualification work and to submit applications for subsequent research projects.

  • Postdoc funds of the PCMO: The Postdoc Fund promotes formats of academic exchange that serve to consolidate and expand specialist and interdisciplinary skills. Within this framework, funding can be applied for, for example, for conference or training trips.
  • Open Access Publication Fund: Through the Publication Fund, the University Library supports the publication of academic articles in journals and the publication of open access monographs and anthologies by paying a proportion of the processing fees.
  • Sustainability funding fund: The Sustainability Fund is also used to support small-scale projects/measures/initiatives that are specifically related to sustainability and contribute to the sustainable development of JLU. Initiatives from the student body can also be funded.

Training opportunities for postdocs

At Justus Liebig University, postdocs from all departments have access to the central service point, the Postdoc Career and Mentoring Office (PCMO) which offers interdisciplinary qualification and further training opportunities, individual advice on career paths and options, as well as mentoring. Postdocs can also take advantage of offers from the graduate centers, personnel development (including events from the continuing education and training program), and the Career Services and the University Didactic Competence Center for advice and personal and professional training. If you are interested in start-ups and self-employment, the Entrepreneurship Cluster Mittelhessen (ECM) offers various courses and networking opportunities and organizes ideas competitions.
