W1 / Tenure-Track Professorships / Research Group Leaders

W1 professors at JLU benefit from information on funding bodies, mentoring, career counseling, and support in third-party applications.

Following the amendment of the Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG), Justus Liebig University Giessen implemented the tenure-track procedure as a rule in 2017. It enables outstanding postdocs to achieve early independence in research and teaching and at the same time offers a clear perspective with greater predictability for the individual career. The Human Resources Department will be happy to inform you about the JLU tenure track procedure.

Internal Funding

  • Research sponsorships: This fund is used for the start-up financing of large collaborative research projects that are to lead to a third-party funded project within a manageable framework (e.g. SFB, FOR, RTGs). The proposed projects should also contribute to the further development of the university's specific research profile.
  • Fund of the Office for Equal Opportunities (BfC): The BfC supports tenure track professorships with childcare responsibilities in the form of travel funds for business trips with children, the fund for subsidizing additional childcare costs and the auxiliary staff fund.
  • Open Access Publication Fund: Through the Publication Fund, the University Library supports the publication of academic articles in journals or the publication of open access monographs and anthologies by paying a proportion of the processing fees.
  • Postdoc Fund of the PCMO: The Postdoc Fund promotes formats of academic exchange that serve to consolidate and expand specialist and interdisciplinary skills. In this context, funding can be applied for, e.g. for conference or training trips.
  • Sustainability funding fund: The sustainability funding fund is also used to support small-scale projects/measures/initiatives that are specifically related to sustainability and contribute to the sustainable development of JLU. Initiatives from the student body can also be funded.
