Composition of the study programme
The study programme is composed of:
- a major in Slavic Studies (120 CP) and
- a minor (40 CP)
An internship or a project (10 CP) will prepare you for the professional world.
The programme qualifies students for a wide range of professional fields such as business, publishing, public employers, the media, etc.
Slavic Studies Major
The major Slavic Studies deals with literary and cultural studies as well as linguistics. The aspect of practical language training is of particular importance.
The major is composed of two Slavic languages:- The first Slavic language must be chosen before the start of the programme, at the latest when enrolling. You can choose the following languages:
- Russian Studies/Russian
- Polish Studies/Polish
- Bohemistics/Czech
- The second Slavic language must be chosen for the third semester. You can choose the following languages:
- Polish Studies/Polish
- Bohemistics/Czech
- Ukrainian Studies/Ukrainian
- Southern Slavistics/Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian
Combination rules:
Subjects of the same name cannot be combined. If Polish Studies/Polish or Bohemistics/Czech is chosen as the first Slavic language, then Russian Studies/Russian must be taken as the second Slavic language.
Minor
The following minor subjects are offered:
- Political science
- History
- Sociology
At the same time, the Master's programme "Slavic Studies" will start in winter semester 2020/21.

Admission requirements
- General higher education entrance qualification (= Abitur or comparable qualification), Fachhochschule entrance qualification, master craftsman's examination, higher education entrance qualification for professionally qualified persons. More...
- Proof of internship (pre-study internship) is not required.
- Please note that applicants with a foreign higher education entrance qualification are also required to provide proof of German language skills. More...

Options for further study at JLU
Upon successful completion of the Bachelor's degree, the following consecutive Master's programmes can be studied at JLU:
- Slavic Studies
- Depending on the subjects chosen in the Bachelor's programme, other Master's programmes at JLU may also be considered, e.g. Intercultural Communication and Business, Interdisciplinary Studies on Eastern Europe
Career options
The exact areas of activity depend on the individual specialisation undertaken by the students. Nonetheless, it is possible to identify the following fields of activity: communication, further training, and the cultural sector. These include:
- journalism and publishing/ radio, broadcast and television/ editing
- librarianship, documentation, information technology
- adult education/ civic education (adult education centre, trade unions, employer's associations/ boards, parties, charities, churches)
- associations (boards, organisations, parties, charities, parliamentary services)
- press- and public relations activities (for parties, associations, public or semi-public institutions, radio, broadcast and television)
- higher education institution and other research institutes
- private schools
- tourism (sector)/ leisure sector
- opinion research
- social services/ non-profit organisations
- theatre and all its disciplines/ cultural sector: (trade) fairs and markets
- visual arts/ museums/ collections/ exhibitions
- international organisations/ cultural exchange
- career guidance/ counselling
