Dissertation Project:

In the center of the investigation is the reciprocal relation between memory, identity and literature. It is based on the assumption that literary texts constitute a specific form of cultural expression, that, as such, performatively create and not only represent collective memories and identities. In this context two questinos are central: 1. Which characteristics mark literary texts as a singular medium concerning memory and identity? 2. In which socio-political context can the literarily constructed past be interpreted? This second question implies a reference to the postmodern dialectics of particularism and universalism, terminologically reflected for example by Roland Robertson (,glocalisation‘).

 
In this context the literary representation (or construction) of Gernika, a highly symbolic site of memory which is paradigmatic for cosmopolitan memory (Levy / Sznaider), will be analized in prose and drama. The former basque semantics of this site of memory has been transcended especially by Picasso’s Guernica and has become a universal synonym for the condemnation of war and violence. Studying Gernika as a site of memory, the memory of the Civil War before and after Franco’s death in 1975 as well as the basque conflict, el problema vasco, will also be focused.
