Gender in Post-Migrant Society: Negotiations over Integration, Culture, and Diversity

Projektmitglieder: Dr. Pinar Gümüs Mantu, Nagehan Durmuskaya (12/2020-04/2021)

This research project focuses on the interplay between gender and migration discourses with regards to perceptions of cultural difference and studies how this social configuration is reflected in the policies, practices, and experiences of integration specifically in the case of “Turkish migrant women” in Germany. The ways in which gender-based discourses and relations function in the construction/continuance of the category of migrant as well as in the migrant-host dichotomy stands as one of the main spotlights of the project. From this perspective, the project intends to decipher the complex construction of discursive knowledge by which understandings of ‘us’ and ‘them’ are produced, particularly with regard to issues of culture and diversity in the post-migrant society. Addressing themes such as motherhood, education, and work, and employing an ethnography-oriented cultural-sociological approach, the research spotlights the ordinary, everyday life experiences of Turkey-originating migrant women around the issue of integration, and also focuses on the moments of encounter between migrant women and members of the broader German society, particularly looking closer at administrative procedures and institutional settings.
