Study Requirements

  1. Master's degree or equivalent diploma in medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, biology, chemistry, or similar scientific disciplines
  2. Excellent scores in final examinations of a German or foreign university
  3. Fluency in the English language

The PhD program is part of the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine and Medicine of the Justus Liebig University Giessen and is based on the PhD Statutes, dated December 11th and 16th, 2002 (Staatsanzeiger Nr. 16 dated 21 April, 2003, pages 1556ff.). Students are to write an acceptable doctoral dissertation (thesis), based on their original research. Furthermore, students participate in interdisciplinary research-oriented lectures and courses of study. The minimum requirements are 135 hours in the area of basic molecular biology, cell biology, and statistics as well as an additional 165 hours of elective courses from the disciplines of anatomy, cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, genetics and gene technology, internal medicine, microbiology, virology, parasitology, and reproductive medicine and biology, as well as animal models and laboratory animal handling. A supervisor, in whose research group the participant is to conduct the proposed research project, will be assigned to each PhD candidate. An advisory group is available to provide individual, professional advice.
