TALK ABOUT ARTIFICIALITY AND TECHNOLOGY IN
CONTEMPORARY PERFORMANCE

Kris Verdonck, currently a guest professor at the ATW, is an internationally acclaimed Belgian director, choreographer and visual artist, working mostly between theatre and visual art. He is the author of numerous performances and installations in which he combines his theatrical interest with the visual exploration of the theatrical body, space and time. 

Machines, doubles, ghosts, puppets, marionettes have been an essential part of theatre for a long time, however they are also acquiring new meanings in the world of rapid technological and scientific development. The human figure on stage cannot be understood without the technological aspect which is deeply transforming the experience of humanness and changing the exploration of the dehumanized figure.

In their talk, Kris and Bojana Kunst, Professor at the ATW, will focus especially on the artificial and technological aspects in Kris' later works which open up various dimensions of the relationship between theatre and nonhuman, performer and object. In his dance installations, performances, puppet shows and public space installations, Kris is often addressing the role of performing objects in the contemporary age and approaching the performance as the field of technologically transformed perception and imagination of what it means to be human.

The ATW TALKS are a series of talks and lectures at the ATW, the Institut für Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft at Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen. They have been taking place in a monthly interval since the end of 2015. Their aim is to create a forum for discussions on contemporary theatre, dance and performance, contributing to the academic and artistic discourse at the institute, in the city and in the Hessian theatre landscape. What is often considered an advantage of the ATW, will be equally true for the talks and lectures: hidden away from a general public with its necessity
for self-representation, the context in Gießen offers a unique possibility for an open exchange with a critical perspective and for intense and extensive debates. Each edition of the ATW TALKS is moderated by a member of staff working at the institute. Invitations are extended to artists and
academics from the performing arts and affiliated disciplines. The talks and lectures are generally conducted in English, on certain occasions though, they are held in German or French.
