CuP is an international master programme at the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies in Gießen (Germany), which strives to provide a stimulating environment for the development of artistic practices and works in relation to sociopolitical developments and philosophical discussions. It fosters exchange, experimentation and reflection, and emphasizes the entanglement of theory and practice. As a full-time, two-year study programme in English, the MA CuP enables students from diverse contexts to engage in an expanded notion of choreography and performance.
Prof. Dr. Bojana Kunst and Mila Lanz design the course inside Applied Theatre Studies (ATW), and with the cooperation of Hessische Theaterakademie (HTA).

The aesthetic judgment and artistic aptitude required for the M.A. in Choreography and Performance are assessed through an aptitude test; therefore, interested applicants must first apply in advance for the aptitude test at the Institute for ATW. The aptitude test for the M.A. in Choreography and Performance consists of two parts: a portfolio review and an oral exam.
Admission requirements
- Relevant bachelor‘s degree: B.A. in Applied Theatre Science at JLU (minimum grade: good or better) or B.A. (or equivalent) in a theatre-relevant subject with a focus on dance and/or performance (minimum grade: good or better).

- English skills are essential; German, however, is not required.

The Concept of the MA in „Choreography and Performance”
The MA in „Choreography and Performance“ aims at students who have both an interest in scholarly academic work and who have intensively dealt with the fields of dance, body, movement, choreography, and performance in their studies and artistic processes.The degree has been developed as a consecutive MA degree and builds on a first professional qualifying university degree of Applied Theatre Studies, dance or adequate completed training plus possible professional experience, spanning over several years, leading to a further professional artistic qualifying degree. The goal is to train artistic personalities, who are prepared for the complexity of the demands of contemporary performing art in the field of dance and performance theoretically and practically.
Course of Study
The MA has been designed to expand on, deepen and reflect theoretically in seminars as well as in practical courses on dance-scientific, dance-practical and theatre-scientific content and sample one’s own work artistically and practically. The degree is completed with a successful completion of all modules, the thesis consists of one’s own artistic practical work.The M.A. CuP consists of 10 modules covering 120 ECTS credits. Many graduates are striving for a career as a freelance artist or choreographer, whereby, corresponding to the culture of collaboration in the M.A. CuP, they often work in a collective or team.
Furthermore, graduates work in the fields of dance, dramaturgy, press or media, research and teaching, cultural education, festival organization and cultural management. Within 'Dance in schools' and 'Community dance', further professional fields open up for graduates.
