The fast track to a PhD

The "PreProChem" programme has been designed for outstanding students, to whom we aim to offer an exclusive research training programme through a correspondingly rigorous course of study that shortens the time taken to complete a PhD in chemistry, as well as through early involvement in the research work of a research group.

In the first year of study, the programme involves taking compulsory modules from the M.Sc. in Chemistry, whilst also participating in the research of a selected research group as part of a two-semester laboratory module. The third semester consists of a research project module, which concludes with a written report. Over the course of the next three months, the applicant may sit the oral doctoral aptitude examination (oral assessment of doctoral aptitude).

You are eligible to apply for this programme if you hold a BSc degree in

  • Chemistry,
  • Food Chemistry,
  • Materials Science/ Advanced Materials,
  • Biology or
  • Physics

or an equivalent qualification, and have achieved a final grade of 1.5 or higher, or are among the top 10% of students in your graduating cohort.
