Welcome to IPPAE!

The International PhD Program for Agricultural Economics, Bioeconomy and Sustainable Food Systems at Justus-Liebig-University Giessen lays its thematic focus on empirical, problem-solving research at the crossroads between agricultural economics, agricultural sociology, farm economics and sustainable resource use.

The IPPAE Program supports your application for a doctoral scholarship by offering to be your host during the duration of your scholarship. As your host, IPPAE offers you access to a structural PhD program, academic supervision of your PhD project and a workplace at the Justus Liebig University Giessen.

IPPAE does not provide the scholarship. But we have maintained a long-term collaboration with DAAD and support individual applications to DAAD-funded doctoral scholarship programs.  Finding DAAD Scholarships

PhD students at IPPAE also receive funding from other sources such as the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) or the Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), but these organisations typically do not provide individual scholarships.

 

Here are the key aspects of our support:

  • IPPAE reviews the key application documents (such as the CV and the research proposal) to determine whether the project fits the program and if we can provide academic and institutional hosting.
  • If your application fits the program and we can provide hosting, the IPPAE will issue the necessary documents (such as host confirmation, confirmation of academic supervision, etc.) to support you application for a scholarship (e.g. to DAAD).
  • If your scholarship application was supported by us and accepted by the funding organisation, we expect you to join the IPPAE program at the Justus Liebig University Giessen. In this case you get full access to our institutional facilities, academic supervision and the structured doctoral education program of IPPAE. This access comes without extra cost to you.
  • We expect your scholarship to provide sufficient financial support to cover all expenses associated with your stay in Giessen, including health insurance, accomodation costs and any other related costs. Regular semester fees at Justus Liebig University may apply. (current semester fees)
  • The Student Union in Giessen provides preferential access to student housing for international students. We will support you throughout the application process.
  • In a nutshell: IPPAE supports your application to a funding organisation, but we do not provide scholarships ourselves. The application for scholarship is between you and the respective funding organisation. Please make sure you comply with the requirements of the funding organisation (see e.g. DAAD scholarship information). The ultimate decision about your scholarship is with the funding organisation. To receive IPPAE's support you will need to submit an IPPAE application.

The IPPAE Program

The International PhD Program for Agricultural Economics, Bioeconomy and Sustainable Food Systems was first accredited in 1992 by the funder, the German Academic Exchange Office (DAAD). To date, more than 130 candidates have received their PhD through the program in Giessen.

Candidates receive support from a supervisor, from the IPPAE coordination team as well as from the IPPAE working group. They have a great number of opportunities to network within a large peer and research community and to enhance their scientific and professional skills.
