Short Description

Artificial Intelligence is increasingly shaping academic work, teaching practices, and professional development. At the same time, many researchers and doctoral candidates are still looking for orientation: What exactly is AI? How can it be used responsibly in academia? What opportunities and challenges does it create for research, teaching, and career development?

The AI World Café offers a low-threshold and interactive space to discuss these questions together. It is designed as a two-hour interactive World Café that combines short expert inputs with open discussion rounds. Participants rotate through four thematic discussion tables and engage with different perspectives on AI in academia.

Rather than focusing on technical expertise, the event aims to create an accessible and reflective environment for exchange, questions, and collaborative exploration. The World Café is jointly organised by the Graduate Centre and the Teaching Centre and addresses doctoral researchers and early career academics from all disciplines.

The event aims to:

  • provide orientation in the rapidly evolving field of AI in academia
  • encourage reflection on opportunities, risks, and responsibilities
  • explore practical uses of AI in research, teaching, and career planning
  • foster interdisciplinary exchange among doctoral researchers
  • identify participants’ interests and needs for future AI-related workshops and support formats

Topics

Participants will rotate through four discussion tables:

  • AI in Research
Exploring opportunities, limitations, and practical applications of AI in academic research.
  • AI in Teaching
Discussing how AI is changing higher education, learning processes, and teaching practices.
  • AI for Career Development
Reflecting on future skills, professional positioning, and AI-related changes in academic and non-academic career paths.
  • AI and Research Ethics
Addressing questions of responsibility, transparency, bias, authorship, and ethical AI use.

Each table will be hosted by a moderator with experience in the respective field who will provide a brief input and guide the discussion.
