Overview
In the Bachelor’s program in Applied Mathematics, you will not only learn the fundamentals of mathematics but also discover how to apply them to solve problems in engineering, business, or data analysis.
The program is designed to be very flexible: You can tailor your studies to your individual interests and choose a specialization. Current options include computer science, artificial intelligence, business informatics, business mathematics, and statistics. This allows you to directly apply your mathematical knowledge to the fields that interest you.
Profile
A degree in Applied Mathematics is the right choice for you if you enjoy getting to the bottom of things and recognizing patterns in complex contexts.
It requires not only perseverance and creative problem-solving, but also an interest in putting theory into practice.
The program differs significantly from the purely computational math taught in high school: It’s not just about applying formulas, but above all about thinking analytically and understanding and developing mathematical models for the real world.
In Giessen, mathematics students benefit from particularly strong academic support and establish personal contact with their professors early on. They can choose from a wide range of courses and thus specialize in areas such as financial mathematics, numerical methods, optimization, or stochastics. In general, Giessen stands out as the city with the highest student density in Germany.

After completing your bachelor’s degree, you can continue on to a master’s program in mathematics or switch to an applied field such as data science or applied computer science.
Structure
The first year of the mathematics program in Giessen consists of courses in analysis and linear algebra, which form the foundation for the rest of the program. Building on this foundation, students take courses in numerical methods, optimization, and stochastics. A programming course and basic statistics modules are also required.
In addition, students choose a specialization from the fields of computer science, artificial intelligence, business informatics, business mathematics, and statistics, which accounts for about one-third of the program’s coursework. This allows you to directly apply your mathematical knowledge to the fields of application that interest you.
If your preferences change, it is easy to switch between the Mathematics and Applied Mathematics programs in either direction.

Preperation
We recommend that all first-year students take the preparatory course in Mathematical Thinking.
There, students can get a head start on both the subject of mathematics and the course formats as they will be later in their studies.
For anyone who would like to refresh their basic math skills from high school, we offer the “General Mathematics” preparatory course.
This course is designed to reinforce basic knowledge but is not intended as preparation for the analytical thinking required in your degree program.
