What can I expect from this programme?

In the Bachelor's degree programme Anglophone Studies you will acquire academic skills and knowledge of the English language and its teaching, literature and the cultures of English-speaking countries at the internationally recognised teaching and research institute of English Studies in Giessen. By choosing your own focus from the areas of linguistics or literary studies or media and cultural studies, you can shape your studies individually.

What will I learn?

In addition, the Bachelor's programme provides you with the basics and research results of the corresponding subject sciences as well as comprehensive methodological skills and key qualifications. You will get to know important subject-specific and subject-didactic contents, models and theories and acquire the qualification to acquire further ones as well as to critically assess and evaluate them.

How is the programme structured?

The programme consists of:

the major subject Anglophone Studies (120 CP)
a minor subject (40 CP)
acquisition of extracurricular competences (or partially replaceable by a project) (20 CP)
the Bachelor's thesis (10 CP)

Anglophone Studies major (120 CP)

Contains the following main subjects (40 CP each):

Literary, Cultural and Media Studies
Linguistics
TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language)

Minor subject (40 CP)

one of the following subjects can be chosen as a minor subject:

Anglophone Studies with focus on Literary, Cultural and Media Studies (if not main subject)
Anglophone Studies with focus on Linguistics (if not main subject)
Anglophone Studies with focus on TEFL (if not main subject)
German studies
French studies / French
Hispanic studies / Spanish
Portuguese studies / Portuguese
Sociology
Political Science
Pedagogy

Additionally an internship module and the attainment of the UNIcert® Certificate III are integrated into the course of studies. The students can choose a further practical language module (English for Specific Purposes) as well as the module "Gender, Sexuality, and Diversity". The programme qualifies students, for example, for tasks in the media, in cultural institutions and non-school educational institutions as well as for the Master's programme Anglophone Studies.

Which options for further study does JLU offer?

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor's degree, the following consecutive Master's programmes can be studied at JLU:

Depending on the subjects chosen in the Bachelor's programme, other Master's programmes at JLU may also be considered, e.g.

What career paths can I pursue after graduation?

The exact areas of activity depend on the individual specialisation undertaken by the students. Nonetheless, it is possible to identify the following fields of activity: communication, further training, and the cultural sector. These include:

Application and Enrolment

Requirements

A valid university entrance qualification (German: HZB) is required for admission to the program.

From Germany: General university entrance qualification (= Abitur or equivalent), vocational university entrance qualification, master craftsman’s certificate, university entrance qualification for professionally qualified individuals.
From abroad: You can find out whether the university entrance qualification from your home country qualifies you for direct admission to a degree program in Germany on the information portal for the recognition of foreign educational qualifications (anabin) .

Proof of an internship (pre-internship) is not required for admission.

Applicants with a foreign university entrance qualification should also note the required proof of German language proficiency .

Language requirements

To enrol in the Anglophone Studies degree programme, you must meet the language requirements for English level B1 (CEFR). These must be proven as follows:

a) a language certificate, level CEFR B1,
b) by passing an English exam at a university which verifiably certifies level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and is not older than two years,
c) other suitable proof of English language skills at level CEFR B1.
