Artwork on Buildings

In the case of larger public buildings, it is customary to also integrate works of art. These should make an independent contribution to the building project and relate to the architecture or the function of the building. The artists are usually selected in competitions. The state provides funds to cover the costs of the artworks. At JLU, with its numerous buildings, there is therefore a whole range of artwork to be discovered. The spectrum ranges from murals and sculptures to large-scale stained-glass windows. The new or reconstructed buildings of the 1950s marked the beginning. Thus, building artwork can be found in the rebuilt main building, which was destroyed in the Second World War, or in the old university library in Bismarckstrasse. Over the past 70 years, a considerable 'art collection' has thus been created, from which the development of contemporary art can be read. Art is also already firmly planned for building projects in coming years.
