DE: Deutschland im Jahr 2000. Die neue Reality-Show Big Brother versetzt das Land in einen kollektiven Ausnahmezustand: Hundert Tage lang leben zehn Menschen gemeinsam in einem Container voller Kameras. Parteien, Kirchen und Medieninstitute fordern ein sofortiges Ende des „menschenverachtenden Experiments“, andere feiern die Demokratisierung des Fernsehens. Doch was als mediales Experiment beginnt, wird schnell zum gesellschaftlichen Brennglas: Während männliche Bewohner wie Slatko und Jürgen gefeiert werden, entlädt sich der Hass gegen einzelne Frauen im Haus. In Sprechchören, Schlagzeilen und Talkshows entblößt sich ein Land – seine Sehnsüchte, seine Ressentiments, seine Vorstellungen von Gemeinschaft… Mit BIG OTHER – Wir verstehen uns total bringt das europäische Performancekollektiv BOYS* IN SYNC die erste Staffel von Big Brother zurück auf die Bühne. Aus dem popkulturellen Phänomen wird ein theatraler Erfahrungsraum: Über uns, damals wie heute. Über Geschlechterrollen und Solidarität. Und über die Frage, was uns verbindet, wenn wir uns wirklich aushalten müssen. Eine Koproduktion mit den Landungsbrücken Frankfurt. Gefördert durch das Kulturamt Frankfurt.
EN: Germany in the year 2000. The new reality show Big Brother plunges the country into a collective state of emergency: For one hundred days, ten people live together in a container filled with cameras. Political parties, churches, and media institutes call for an immediate end to the “inhumane experiment,” while others celebrate the democratization of television. But what begins as a media experiment quickly becomes a societal magnifying glass: While male contestants like Slatko and Jürgen are celebrated, hatred is unleashed against individual women in the house. In chants, headlines, and talk shows, a country lays itself bare—its longings, its resentments, its ideas of community… With BIG OTHER – Wir verstehen uns total, the European performance collective BOYS* IN SYNC brings the first season of Big Brother back to the stage. The pop-cultural phenomenon becomes a theatrical space of experience: about us, then and now. About gender roles and solidarity.
