Local Ethics Committees

One of the duties of scientists in research projects - depending on their respective contexts (legal requirements, requirements of funding bodies, discipline-related standards, etc.) - is to obtain and submit the necessary ethics votes and approvals. Ethics votes are issued by local ethics committees of the departments or, in some cases, by specialist societies. The local ethics committees at JLU play a central role in the evaluation and monitoring of research projects, especially those involving human participants or sensitive data. These independent bodies ensure that ethical standards and principles in research are adhered to in order to protect the rights, welfare and integrity of those involved. Ethics committees evaluate research protocols in terms of their ethical acceptability, offer advice on ethical issues and thus help to ensure that university research meets the highest ethical standards. Local ethics committees have currently been set up at three faculties. Failure to obtain the required ethics votes constitutes a form of scientific misconduct (see JLU Statutes on Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice, Section 6 (2)).
