Panel: Digital Internationalization of Teacher Education in Higher Education

Internationalization has become a key issue for higher education. Compared with other study programs – such as finance or technologies – teacher education is strongly governed locally since it has the task to qualify teachers for specific national contexts. Each nation has special characteristics that are influenced by complex configurations of historical, political, social, cultural, and educational factors (Leutwyler, Popov & Wolhuter, 2017, p. 66-67).
In result of globalization, increasing migration and multiculturality of (most) societies, the question arises of how to develop pedagogical approaches to deal with the growing sociocultural complexity in the field of education. Research on teacher education shows that the attitudes brought along by prospective teachers are very static if they are not actively worked on, i.e. expanded by reflection on new experiences with regard to diversity and inclusion in teacher education (e.g. Heinrich, Urban & Werning, 2013). Future generations of teachers will need a ‘global’ understanding, international experiences and intercultural competences to be able to handle and use diversity in classrooms and to serve as role models for learning across borders (DAAD, 2013; Sieber & Mantel, 2012, p. 6).
Dealing with a strongly national focus on the one hand and with the growing interculturality of society on the other hand, teacher education needs to develop own ways of an appropriate internationalization. In recent years – especially pushed by the covid pandemic – some pilot projects were started to internationalize teacher education supported by digital media.
This panel has the aim to present different concepts of teacher education for internationalization as well as to discuss some fundamental questions (e.g. How can digital media support internationalization of teacher education? Which strategies support digital internationalization of teacher education?) as well as to give national and international teacher educators a platform to network with each other.
For that, we are looking for speakers. There are two different formats for participation:
- Impulse-key-notes (~15min./note) presenting practiced concepts (“best practice”) and strategies of internationalization of teacher education.
- Focus-groups (45 min.) focused on special topics of internationalization of teacher education (in addition to a short theoretical input the focus should be on the discussion of a special topic).
The entire panel will be in English. Submissions from international stakeholders are explicitly welcome.
