Sport Kardiologie (PD Dr. med. Pascal Bauer)

Research focus

Our sports cardiology working group has made significant contributions to understanding cardiovascular adaptations to exercise, focusing on blood pressure regulation, central haemodynamics, and vascular function in elite athletes. Our research, particularly on the blood pressure response to exercise, sheds new light on exercise hypertension and vascular function and their relationship to athletic performance. Here we highlight our main focus, recent milestones, and future directions while outlining our achievements and listing our team members.
The core focus of our research revolves around cardiovascular adaptations to exercise, with particular attention to central haemodynamics, vascular function, and exercise-induced hypertension. Specifically, we investigate the workload-indexed markers of blood pressure response in athletes, including the novel systolic blood pressure/metabolic equivalent (SBP/MET) slope. The SBP/MET slope is an innovative approach to assessing blood pressure during exercise and has proven useful for characterizing exercise hypertension in both male and female athletes during pre-participation screening.
