Content

Identity as a highly contested concept of our time will be shortly introduced according to its interpretations in different disciplines. It will be discussed why this concept has been and is a so important part of our life. When and in which period of human history has it become so important? What epistemological trends have made it so significant?

Among many different perspectives to approach identity, the focus of this lecture will be on the social dimensions of identities. The roles of the 4 Fs (Freud, Ferdinand de Saussure, Foucault, and Feminism) in the decentering of the subject and influencing the identity theory will be discussed.

The introduction to discursive characteristics of identity, identity in narrative, and the use of narrative as a tool to study identities are among the aims of this lecture. The cultural aspects of identity such as acculturation, assimilation, separation, and integration will be also touched upon.

Keywords:  social identity, social construction, discourse, narrative, subjectivity, agency
