This guest lecture is part of Prof. Olson's lecture series "Introduction to Gender and Sexuality, Critical Race Theory and Anti-Racism, to Decolonial Thought, and Disability." Everyone is free to join.
Opening with a reflection on the rhetorical maneuvers that Donald Trump has exploited to bolster his political career and secure his ascendancy to the presidency, this talk shows that white people have long strategically deployed colorblindness in tandem with racism and anti-Blackness to ensure the maintenance white supremacy across national boundaries—and continue to do so today to gain consent and win elections, whether in Europe or in the neo-colonies. The South African case, in which a Black-led government continues to support white interests, will further illustrate the reaches of anti-Blackness and colorblindness as technologies of white rule beyond national boundaries.
