THE World University Ranking
The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking evaluates universities according to various criteria in teaching and research, knowledge transfer, third-party funding from industry and international outlook. The annual evaluation also includes reputation surveys, citations and the student-staff ratio. In the 2025 ranking, 2.860 universities worldwide participated, including 52 universities from Germany.

QS Ranking
The World University Ranking published annually by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) lists 1.422 universities in 2026, including 49 German universities. The parameters focus mainly on reputation and academic performance. Only the top 500 universities are individually assessed and ranked.

Shanghai Ranking
The Academic Ranking of World Universities known as "Shanghai Ranking" focuses mainly on international research performance (prestigious research awards, publications, and citations). Just the top 1.000 of a total of 2.500 universities assessed are published.
