In 2009 – on the initiative of the Ensemble Modern, the Hessische Theaterakademie, the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main, the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm and The Forsythe Company – the non-profit organisation Frankfurt LAB was founded as a music, theatre and dance laboratory for modern expression. Ever since, the association has run two spaces for production and showings with the combined measurements of 900 square meters, which are shared between the five creative partners, at the area of Kommunikationsfabrik at Gallus district, Frankfurt. Frankfurt LAB is a space for experiments and, with its flexible and technically well-equiped stages, the perfect space for rehearsing and working. People interested in the arts hereby find an institution without a fixed playing schedule, but with the possibility of spontaneous decisions for showings and inside-views into rehearsals and which invites the public to critically look into the work of the artists working at Frankfurt LAB.

The artistic direction of Frankfurt LAB lies with its five cooperating institutions. Students of the Hessische Theaterakademie intensively use Frankfurt LAB for developing and presenting cooperation projects and solo works. Especially Stage 2 of Frankfurt LAB contributed to improve their working situation. Furthermore, the students benefit from environment and collaborations with internationally recognized partner institutions of LAB.

LAB is venue of numerous open rehearsals and showings from students of Hessische Theaterakademie and the annual festival X Stunden HTA.
