Abstract:

Human health and agriculture have benefitted greatly from natural products, or derivatives thereof, in terms of both medicines in the clinic and the control of crop pests. Behind the scenes natural product isolation has provided these exquisite molecules, with total synthesis following to confirm structure and assist in biologically evaluating these often complex molecules. Omnipresent in this field are opportunities to provide student training and stimulate academic learning, not to mention opening tangential opportunities in discovering new synthetic methodology, physical organic and medicinal chemistry. The lecture will canvas some of these concepts using select examples above and more.
