Double Degree Programmes
Through the international double degree programmes in the fields of Chemistry and Material Science, students of the resp. partner universities can earn a Master’s degree of both universities. The programmes are based on mutual recognition of the study programmes and enable students to gain research experience in another country. Find out about your opportunitites if you come from one of these universities:
University of Padova, Italy
Chemistry
Master students of Chemistry of the Department of Chemical Sciences at the University of Padova (UNIPD) have the opportunity to obtain a double degree. They are awarded 2 Master’s certificates:
- Master’s certificate from JLU („Master of Science“) and
- Master’s certificate from UNIPD („Master of Science“)
Requirements for awarding a double Master’s degree:
Chemistry students from UNIPD have to complete a one semester study stay at JLU. During this time, they have to pass all modules (courses, seminars, lectures, classes or others) defined in a working plan mutually agreed upon by the acadamic coordinators at UNIPD and JLU. Furthermore, the Master’s thesis has to be written under joint supervision by professors from both universities and has to be defended in front of an examination committee.
UNIPD students of the Masters’ programme in Chemistry start their studies at UNIPD. During the first two semesters, they have to successfully participate in courses totalling 60 credits. Afterwards, from semester 3 on, they spend a one semester study stay at JLU where they have to obtain the typical workload of 30 CP (obligatory). Afterwards, the students have two options: they complete their studies by preparing their Master’s thesis, either staying at JLU or coming back at UNIPD (optional).
More information can be found in the Special Regulations for the degree programme.
Material Science
Master students of Material Science of the Department of Chemical Sciences at the University of Padova (UNIPD) have the opportunity to obtain a double degree. They are awarded 2 Master’s certificates:
- Master’s certificate from JLU („Master of Science“) and
- Master’s certificate from UNIPD („Laurea Magistrale in Material Sciences“)
Requirements for awarding a double Master’s degree:
Students have to complete a one year study stay at JLU. During this time, they have to pass all modules (courses, seminars, lectures, classes or others) defined in a working plan mutually agreed upon by the acadamic coordinators at UNIPD and JLU. UNIPD students of the Masters’ programme in Materials Science start their studies at UNIPD. During the first two semesters, they have to successfully participate in courses totalling 60 credits. Afterwards, from semester 3 on (semester 3: October – March, semester 4: April – July), they spend a one year study stay at the JLU where they have to obtain the typical workload of 60 CP including their Master’s thesis.

Chemistry
Master students of the Kansai University (KU) have the opportunity to obtain a double degree. They are awarded 2 Master’s certificates:
- Master’s certificate from JLU („Master of Science“) and
- Master’s certifikate from KU („Master of Engineering“)
Requirements for awarding a double Master’s degree:
Students have to complete a one year study stay at JLU. During this time, they have to pass all modules (i.a. the course work) defined in a working plan mutually agreed upon by the acadamic coordinators at KU and JLU. Furthermore, the Master’s thesis has to be written under joint supervision by professors from both universities and has to be defended in front of an examination committee.
Schedule for KU students:
Master students of the KU start their studies in April at KU. During their first semester (April – September) they typically obtain 10 credit points by lecture courses and 4 credit points by seminar courses.
From October on, they spend a one year study stay (2 semesters) at JLU, where they have to obtain 60 CP in total. Students have to pass 5 lecture-based modules (3 core modules and 2 elective modules; 6 CP each). Furthermore, depending on their research profile, students choose 3 research modules (10 CP each), in consultation with their supervisor.
Back at the KU, along with 2 credits lecture courses and 4 credits seminar courses, students complete their studies by preparing and defending their Master's thesis.
In addition to the described schedule, KU students can also start in their first semester (April) at JLU and spend their first year at JLU before returning to KU. These students will follow the same study programme at JLU as those coming in their second semester.
More information can be found in the Special Regulations for the degree programme (appendix "Double Degree Program").
Material Science
