Janina Schlüsselburg

About me

Janina Schlüsselburg is a doctoral candidate at the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) at Justus Liebig University Giessen and works as a research assistant at the Center for Media and Interactivity (ZMI). She is also an associate member of the DFG research group Human Rights Discourse in Migration Societies (MeDiMi) and conducts research in the MeDiMi project “Dehumanizing, Victimizing, or Universalizing? How Images of Migration Interact with Human Rights Discourse”. In her PhD project, she focuses on visual representations of migration published in the German, U.S. American and Australian media from 2015 onwards and links these representations to an international human rights discourse. Within MeDiMi, she is committed to networking and collaboration among junior researchers and postdocs by co-establishing the Working Group “Human Rights Discourse in Migration Societies” at the Giessen Graduate Centre for Social Sciences, Business, Economics and Law (GGS).

After completing a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in American Studies at the University of Hamburg, she specialized in Anglophone cultural and media studies as part of the Master of Arts (M.A.) British and American Cultures: Texts and Media at the University of Hamburg. She wrote her master’s thesis on “Thug 4 Life. The American Gangster Culture of Hip Hop as Consumer Discourse”. After completing her master’s degree, she worked as a research assistant for a law firm in Sydney specializing in human rights violations, thus gaining practical experience in the field of human rights.

Her research interests lie in the areas of Anglophone media and cultural studies, migration studies, international relations, and human rights discourse.
