Abstract

So the conference or meeting break has finally arrived – and now it's time to network and meet new people. Not all of us are natural-born conversationalists or gifted smooth talkers, however, and the idea of striking up a conversation with a perfect stranger is enough to make most people feel quite awkward and uncomfortable.

This workshop provides an opportunity to learn and practise the most important techniques and patterns that help grease the wheels of social interaction in casual work settings: how to say hello and introduce yourself (without sounding stuffy and boring), how to start and sustain a conversation (without appearing 'fake'), how to end a conversation (without being abrupt), and several other useful things besides.

The workshop is designed to help non-native speakers of English get the most out of their language skills and build conversational competence and confidence in an interactive and fun way.
