Workshop „Air-Breathing Electric Propulsion II“
On the 29th and 30th of September 2025, the research group "Ionentriebwerke" led by Prof. Dr. Peter Klar held its second workshop on "Air-Breathing Electric Propulsion" at the JLU, supported by the GGN. The event brought together experts from various institutions to discuss the latest challenges and solutions in Air-Breathing Electric Propulsion (ABEP) for Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) applications. The aim was to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and inspire new research and development in this field.
Organized by PhD candidates Konstantin Keil, Andreas Wölki, and Jana Zorn, the workshop facilitated an open and engaging exchange between representatives from established institutions and innovative startups. Participants from agencies and large research organizations (ESA, DLR, ArianeGroup), startups (NewOrbit, Kreios, ThrustMe, Stellar Space), and universities (Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa) presented 12 short talks, promoting intensive discussions on key topics such as:
- Intake systems for ABEP
- Plasma characterization and neutralization
- Long-term stability challenges in VLEO
- Scaling and integration of ABEP systems in small satellites
In addition to the professional exchange, ample opportunities were given for networking – during the joint dinner and between the scheduled agenda items. Participants found the workshop highly beneficial, with several concrete collaboration initiatives emerging, particularly in experimental validation and numerical modeling. Planning for the third edition of the workshop in 2026 is already underway.
