Language Courses

The International Office of JLU Giessen offers German courses at various levels (some including a fee) online. Here you can also prepare for the DSH exam and TestDaF.

Language courses for other foreign languages (e.g. English) are also offered online by the Center for Foreign Language and Vocational Competences (ZfbK).

Extra-curricular Competencies

The ZfbK also offers digital courses on extra-curricular competencies.

Web Seminars

Currently the International Office is planning various web seminars for international students and doctoral candidates. More information can be found on this website and in the international calendar at the end of April/beginning of May.

Visits to the Authorities

Registration with the Authorities

Everywhere in Germany you have to register with the authorities within 14 days if you change your place of residence. This means that after your arrival you must move into an apartment and sign a tenancy agreement. You must bring your identity card or passport and a confirmation from your landlord.

Please note the current information from the Giessen city office. You can still reach the Giessen City Office by e-mail () or by telephone (0641 306-1234).

Opening a Bank Account

If you would like to open an account with a bank in Germany, you can also apply for this online. To open a bank account, you usually have to submit the following documents or provide proof of information:

  • Identity card/passport
  • Address in Germany ("confirmation of accommodation provider" and/or confirmation of registration from the city office)
  • Letter of admission and/or (provisional) student identity card/chip card

Head offices of the banks in Giessen:

Health Insurance

Before enrolling, we strongly recommend that students take out a German statutory health insurance policy (approx. 105 € per month). You can find examples of statutory health insurance here. Students from EU countries can prove that they have sufficient insurance coverage with the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC card). If you have any questions regarding health insurance, we will be happy to advise you.

Immigration Office

All international students from non-EU countries need a valid residence permit for Germany. Before you apply for a residence permit, you must register at the city office of Giessen. The application or the extension of the residence permit should be applied for at least one month before its expiry. If you have any questions regarding the residence permit, we will be happy to advise you.

Please note the current reports on residence law and naturalisation in the Corona crisis of the Giessen Foreigners Authority. You can still contact the Foreigners Authority Gießen by e-mail () or by telephone (0641 306-2280).
