Was entsteht wenn zwei Menschen versuchen eine Gruppe in dem Prozess einer Migration zu repräsentieren? Wie reagiert ein Körper-in-Not räumlich und zeitlich auf einen bedrohten Körper? Was wird hervorgerufen wenn Körper überwältigt werden durch das Flattern einer migrierenden Schar, einer stampfenden Herde oder einer unüberschaubaren Herringsschwarm? In „ going places“ extrahiert MuddyBoots Raumwege aus Schwanensees zweitem Akt. Durch das Organisieren von tierischen und menschlichen Handlungen die von extremer Anstrengung, Dringlichkeit und Hoffnungslosigkeit bestimmt sind, wird die Körperlichkeit einer Massenbewegung aufgedeckt. In der vierten abendfüllenden choreografischen Arbeit versucht MuddyBoots in Zusammenarbeit mit Performerin Evie Poaros, Lichtdesignerin Camilla Vetters und dem Komponisten Konstantin Bessonov sich auf Zehenspitzen den aktuellen Gegebenheiten der Migration zu nähern. Sie eröffnen eine Perspektive auf die Bewegungen von Massen in Zusammenhang mit der starren Struktur des klassischen Balletts.

Sieben Jugendliche werden von Erinnerungen aus 100 Jahren Leben aufgefordert. Sie nähern sich den Geschichten von damals und bewegen sich zum Soundtrack dieser Zeit. Wer kann ich heute in deiner Vergangenheit sein? Im Stück begegnen sich zwei Generationen auf einem Parkett: Die Jugend von heute – zwei drei – tanzt aus der Vergangenheit – zwei drei – in den eigenen Gegenwartskörper – und schließen.

"2 oder 3 Dinge, die ich von Ihnen weiß" ist zugleich ein Porträt des Publikums und ein Selbstporträt. Eine außerirdische Kreatur stolpert ins Web 2.0 und erforscht die Sozialnetzwerke in der Hoffnung, auf diesem Weg Freunde zu gewinnen. Sie beschreibt, beobachtet und analysiert, was sie auf Facebook findet, geht Erzählungen auf die Spur und erfindet mögliche Fortführungen. In dieser einsamen, brüchig gewordenen Welt steht die Zukunft unter Aufsicht und erscheint als ein Geflecht aus Wahrscheinlichkeiten. Während die Bilder laufen, steht die Ungewissheit der Begegnung erneut auf dem Spiel.

The second choreographic attempt of the work apricot trees exist or an impossible walk, deals with time passing, memory and loss. It seeks to bring on the surface the forces that curve time and constitute narrations. It is an attempt to grasp the pace of time, to embody it, to visualize it, focusing in the antagonism among present and past. This instant surrender of present to past entails a devastating loss, which can be only captured and restored in our memories and memories are reached when our relation with time allows a moment of interruption; resisting the ceaseless pace of time, a moment of withdrawal from the intensity of the nowness, rendering time an undifferentiated temporal dimension. From this point of view, present can be re-invented, can restore the absence.

The man with the beard——that is how everybody knows Pieter Ampe, and rightly so, because his beard is indeed quite impressive. But obviously, Pieter is much more than just a man with a lot of facial hair. The Belgian choreographer, dancer and performer entered the international performing arts scene with his now legendary performance „Still Standing You“, a duo developed in collaboration with his Portuguese colleague Guilherme Garrido in 2010. “Still Standing You” was not to be his only collaborative effort in the form of a duet. He also performed with theatre maker Benjamin Verdonck (“We don't speak to be understood”, 2015) and with his own brother Jakob (“Jake and Pete's Big Reconciliation Attempt For The Disputes From The Past”, 2011) More recently, Pieter also engaged in a collaborative group piece (“The Coming Community”, 2012) and a solo (“So you can feel”, 2014). 

In EDITION NO. 10 of the ATW TALKS, we invite Pieter to talk about his concept and practice of collaboration, about the differences between solo, duo and group work and about the aesthetics of his works that include a sweaty and rough, but also tender masculinity, the playful humour of a child and the use of several objects such as giant balloons. In the days before and after the talk, Pieter will present two of his performances at theatre Mousonturm in Frankfurt, go and see both of them and check out the Mousonturm homepage for more information.

The grotesque body, sex magic, group experience, fake shamanism, science fction and queer theory—these are just some of the issues that performer and performance maker Jeremy Wade has explored in his artistic works. After graduating from the School For New Dance Development in Amsterdam and receiving a 2006 Bessie Award for his frst evening length performance “Glory” in New York City, Jeremy moved to Berlin and developed a number of performances in close collaboration with HAU. His recent works “Fountain”, “Together Forever”, “Death Asshole Rave Video” and “Drawn Onward” explore the death of man, zombie subjectivity, strange modes of being and affective relationality in an effort to undermine the social codes that defne our bodies. In addition to his performance practice, Jeremy also engages in the organization of events, festivals and symposia such as “Who Cares”, a conference from 2016 addressing a critical version of care, founded on the relational ethics that disability demands.

Jeremy's work has often thematized the problems and affects connected with the precarious conditions of living and working as a freelance artist today, focusing on the twisted climate of neoliberalism that commodifes endless competition, self-mastery and self-improvement. In EDITION NO. 11 of the ATW TALKS, Jeremy will present and process excerpts of his performances that deal with critical and queer understandings of care. Ensuing from his presentation, he and ATW member of staff Martina Ruhsam will talk about the potential of critical care as a possible social, political and artistic methodology.

Stefanie Lorey and Bjoern Mehlig——two ATW alumni, two theatre makers, one duo. Under the label of „Auftrag : Lorey“, the two artists have been working in the German theatre scene since the beginning of the millennium, in their works discretely challenging the borders between performance and theatre, that is especially the institutional boundaries between the so called “Freie Szene” and “Stadttheater”, respectively their modes of production. Their most recent works include “kronos & kairos” (Stadttheater Gießen, 2016), “Back to Black” (Deutsches Theater Berlin, 2015), and “Bouncing in Bavaria” (Schauspiel Frankfurt, 2012).

In Winter 2016/17, Stefanie and Bjoern are back at the ATW, this time teaching a class as guest professors. In EDITION 12 of the ATW TALKS, we take the opportunity to invite them to talk about their concept of theatre, their practices, their modes of rehearsing and how they had to adapt or radicalise them within the contexts of the respective institutions, but also within the current socio-political context. What is today's potential of theatre shows that are still being presented in the 18th century proscenium arch stage or “Guckkastenbühne” of the “Stadttheater”? What is theatre directing or “Regie” in our contemporary situation and what could be the future of acting? ATW member of staff Lorenz Aggermann will chair the evening. The talk will be held in German.

The third edition of the ATW TALKS is a special edition dedicated to the recent publication of the book Artist at Work by Bojana Kunst, professor for choreography and performance at the ATW.

The edition is organised by a group of ATW students who have been meeting for reading sessions since last November with the purpose of relating their experiences as emerging artists to the diagnosis in Bojana's study. Concrete examples and counter-examples of core problems such as the impact of post-fordist capitalism on artistic work and the fetishisation of artistic subjectivity will be investigated. 

We warmly invite you to take part in the discussion by bringing your concerns coming from your very own artistic or academic practice. Instead of confirming the sometimes all too fatalist discourse on art and capitalism, we encourage you to come with a bag full of irrational and hopeful thinking, openings on how to do less, how to make love and not art, and how to find a way to move together with the big pink capitalistic elephant in the room. There will be some discussing together, some reading out loud, drinks, food, dancing – and you can also get your copy of the book signed by the author!

For years now, political agency has been at the core of the discourse on performing arts. However, there has been a shift in tone and perspective lately. Whereas theatre makers and theoreticians alike long used to seek the political in the poetics of performance and the aesthetics of production, these procedures have recently come under criticism of being merely pseudo-political and detached from actual processes of socio-political change. 

One of those who seek to raise attention for different political approaches is dramaturge and artistic director of Impulse Theater Festival Florian Malzacher. In his editing of the survey Not Just a Mirror. Looking for the Political Theatre of Today, he introduces performances and interventions which, so Florian argues, make the theatre a public sphere and thereby a political space in itself. In EDITION NO. 4 of the ATW TALKS, Florian will discuss this and other theses with Georg Döcker, a member of staff at the ATW and with you fellow audiences, who are very welcome to come and join the debate with your arguments and questions.

On the occasion of her guest professorship at the ATW, choreographer and performer Eszter Salamon will discuss her current practice and projects with professor Gerald Siegmund. In most recent years, Eszter has been developing a series of performances all united under the concept of the monument. Each of these performances investigates different approaches to choreography and its entanglement with history and historiography. Thus, the group performance MONUMENT 0 – haunted by wars (1913-2013), which premiered in 2014, gave daunting insight into the symptomatic reverberations of 100 years of war in dances from all over the world. On a more individual level, MONUMENT 0.1: Valda and Gus from 2015 portrayed dancers Valda Setterfield und Gus Solomons Jr., who had been part of some of the most important moments of the history of 20th century dance and still practice their profession despite their old age. Currently, Eszter prepares her next monumental performance, which will focus on the role of the interval in history and its representation. These projects and other aspects of her work will be the subject of Eszter's talk with Gerald.

The ATW TALKS is a series of talks and lectures at the ATW, the Institut für Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft at Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen. They have been taking place since the end of 2015 in irregular intervals, though at least twice a semester. Their aim is to create a forum for discussions on contemporary dance, theatre and performance, contributing to the academic and artistic discourse at the institute, in the city and in the Hessian theatre landscape. What is often considered an advantage of the ATW, will be equally true for the talks and lectures: hidden away from a general public with its necessity for self-representation, the context in Gießen offers a unique possibility for an open exchange with a critical perspective, for intense and extensive debates. Each edition of the ATW TALKS will be moderated by members of staff working at the institute. Invitations are extended to artists and academics from the performing arts and affiliated disciplines. The talks and lectures will generally be conducted in English, on certain occasions though, they might be conducted in German or French.

TALK ABOUT CONCEPTS OF CREATION IN PERFORMANCE
AND DANCE OF TODAY

In her long awaited book “Choreographing Problems” written after her PhD at Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy, Brussels based performance theoretician and maker Bojana Cvejić engages in a research endeavour of utmost importance: 

Analysing seven performances from European choreographers such as Xavier Le Roy, Eszter Salamon and Mette Ingvartsen, Bojana posits that these singular works defy the fundamental concept and logics of representation and introduce instead a concept of expressive creation that allows for the surfacing of unknown differences and multiplicities, thus enabling change. Equally, Bojana argues that these seven performances specifically address a powerful historical nexus proper to dance, that is the “organic regime” of movement and body or the “body-movement bind”, as she calls it. Breaking with this bind, the choreographies in question would open the way for different conjunctions between body and movement and an expanded understanding of dance. 

In a talk with ATW staff member Georg Döcker, Bojana will discuss these and other theses of her PhD study and relate them to her very own practice as a performance maker and dramaturge.

WITH A LECTURE PERFORMANCE BY IVO DIMCHEV

Ivo Dimchev is a virtuoso, a demonic angel and one of the most lascivious creatures that the performing arts have ever seen. The transcendent voice, the blood dripping forehead, the perverted runway walk— features like these define Lili Handel and the many other characters that he embodies on stage, thereby creating his very own interpretation of 21st century performance art. 

Ivo presents these characters in solo works such as “Some Faves” (2009) which made him famous all over Europe, “I-On” (2011) which played around the famous “Passstücke“ by Franz West or, more recently, „Icure“ (2014) which set out to heal the audience and, ideally, the entire world. Over the years, he equally developed several group performances such as “Fest” (2013), an evening about relations of desire and power in the arts world, or “Operville” (2015), a high pitched deconstruction of the apparatus of opera.

In this SPECIAL EDITION of the ATW TALKS, Ivo will present a lecture performance with texts from some of these and other works and then be available to answer your questions.

TALK ABOUT
THE DISCRETE CHARM OF URGENCY

Since artistic projects of the so-called Freie Szene are fundamentally dependent on public subsidies, writing grant applications is a task that has to be successfully completed by many artists. But what is a “good” concept? What is a promising application? And more generally, how do juries’ decisions take influence on the aesthetics in the performing arts or the programming of theatre institutions? 

In EDITION NO. 8 of the ATW TALKS, member of staff Bernhard Siebert will discuss the issues of conceptual work, application prose and the decision-making processes of juries in a conversation with theatre scholar Sandra Umathum. Based on her work as a professor at Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch and jury member in the Berlin Senate (Senate Chancellery for Cultural Affairs) and the National Performance Network (NPN), Sandra will share her knowledge and experience in the field.

In the talk, there will also be room for an open discussion about specific aspects of the politics of public subsidies such as the obstacles of sustainability, the urgency to relate to socio-political questions or recent developments regarding the relation between German Stadttheater and Freie Szene.

KRIS VERDONCK AND BOJANA KUNST
TALK ABOUT ARTIFICIALITY AND TECHNOLOGY IN
CONTEMPORARY PERFORMANCE

Kris Verdonck, currently a guest professor at the ATW, is an internationally acclaimed Belgian director, choreographer and visual artist, working mostly between theatre and visual art. He is the author of numerous performances and installations in which he combines his theatrical interest with the visual exploration of the theatrical body, space and time. 

Machines, doubles, ghosts, puppets, marionettes have been an essential part of theatre for a long time, however they are also acquiring new meanings in the world of rapid technological and scientific development. The human figure on stage cannot be understood without the technological aspect which is deeply transforming the experience of humanness and changing the exploration of the dehumanized figure.

In their talk, Kris and Bojana Kunst, Professor at the ATW, will focus especially on the artificial and technological aspects in Kris' later works which open up various dimensions of the relationship between theatre and nonhuman, performer and object. In his dance installations, performances, puppet shows and public space installations, Kris is often addressing the role of performing objects in the contemporary age and approaching the performance as the field of technologically transformed perception and imagination of what it means to be human.

Für den von Natur aus zur Bodenständigkeit neigenden Menschen verbleibt jeder Zustand des Schwebens zunächst einmal ein offenes Wagnis. Denn aus physikalischer Perspektive zeichnet sich ein Zustand des Schwebens gerade durch die Nihilierung jeglicher Kräfteverhältnisse (und damit zugleich durch den Verlust jeglicher Bodenständigkeit) aus. Obwohl eine solche Abwesenheit von bindenden Kräften im ersten Moment zweifellos ein hohes Maß an Freiheit verspricht, scheint der Mensch letztlich dennoch nur unzureichend für diesen Zustand gerüstet (Dialektik der Aufklärung). Denn wie sich fortbewegen, orientieren, fixieren, annähern, die fragile Balance halten, wenn einen stets grundlegende Bodenlosigkeit (oder ähnlich fatal: ein unendliches Entgleiten) umschwingt? Zuvorderst würde es wohl neue Sensoria, Instrumente und Strategien verlangen, um dieser Bodenlosigkeit zu begegnen. Doch wie hartnäckig bodengläubig der menschliche Körper selbst nach Jahrtausenden des Fortschritts bleibt, mag sich nicht zuletzt darin zeigen, dass im (physikalischen) Kern auch heute noch jeder Schritt kaum mehr als ein abgefangenes Fallen ist.
