Publication on double ionization of argon ions highlighted by PRA editors

A rare process where a single photon kicks out two electrons from an atom could be measured for a wide range of photon energies at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley, California. Such processes are difficult to decribe theoreticallly. In the highlighted study, which was conducted by an international team, perfect agreement between theory and experiment could be achieved for the first time.

New Cluster Project ELEMENTS

Physicists from the Hessian universities Frankfurt, Darmstadt, and Gießen and from the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung have joined forces and proposed the Cluster Project ELEMENTS: Exploring the Universe from microscopic to macroscopic scales. On 1 Febuary 2021, the State of Hesse has announced a positive funding descion. ELEMENTS will bring together world-leading scientists from distinct fields of research – the physics of particles and nuclei, the gravitational physics of merging neutron stars, the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements, and atomic physics – to address the question of the origin of the heavy chemical elements in our Universe. As part of this endeavor, unique atomic-physics experiments are foreseen at the international heavy ion accelarator facility FAIR currently under construction in Darmstadt.

PRL editors highlight new results on multiple photodetachment of negatively charged carbon ions

Using brilliant sysnchrotron radiation from PETRA III at DESY, new atomic resonances and thresholds for multiple detachment of carbon anions were discovered including a clear signature for multiple detachment via double core-hole creation by a single photon [A. Perry-Sassmannshausen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett 124, 083203 (2020), Editors' Suggestion].
