Marcel Strauß from Singlis near Borken (Hessen) joined the Wegner group for his Master thesis during which he worked on the synthesis of phthalazine azo compounds. During his PhD studies he investigated the role of London dispersion forces on the stabilization of the Z-isomer of azobenzene photoswitches and subtle influences of solvents on its switching behaviour.

Andreas Heindl from Freienfels near Weilburg (Hessen) joined the Wegner group for his Bachelor thesis during which he synthesized air stable pyridazine-Lewis acid complexes and investigated their properties. Starting from WS 2015/16 with an internship, he worked on a synthesis for oligoazobenzophanes for his Master thesis. During his PhD studies he worked on the synthesis of macrocyclic azobenzenes and investigated different azobenzene photoswitches.

Sebastian studied chemistry at the University of Basel and received his M. Sc. in 2013, working on the topic of thioether protected gold-nanoparticles in the group of Prof. Dr. Marcel Mayor. For his Ph.D he joined the group of Prof. Dr. Hermann Wegner in Gießen and investigated domino inverse electron-demand Diels–Alder reactions catalysed by a bidentate Lewis Acid and obtained his degree in 2019. He joined the research group of Dr. Urs Gellrich and is working on 3D coordination frameworks of frustrated and classic Lewis Pairs for the activation of small molecules.

Silvia was born in Italy and obtained her master in Biotechnology from the University of Padua. In December 2010 she started an interdisciplinary PhD shared between the Heinis’ group at EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland) and the Wegner’s group at University of Basel. At the interface between molecular biology and organic chemistry, her project was focused on generation and development of photoswitchable (azobenzene-based) peptide ligands by phage display technology. After following the group to the University of Giessen during the last six months on her PhD she obtained the doctoral degree in January 2015.
