Where to Live in Giessen
If you are an exchange student (ERASMUS, ISEP, university cooperation programs, and other types of exchange), a room in one of JLU's halls of residence will be reserved for you, so long as your application reaches us by 15 January or 15 July for the following Summer and Winter Semester respectively. Your application (for admission to the University and for admission to a hall of residence) must be sent to us by your program coordinator at home (i.e. it should not be mailed by you personally). Your coordinator at your university will also provide you with the necessary forms. When applying for accommodation, please do not use the regular forms issued by Student Affairs, but the special yellow forms for international exchange students. Only these yellow forms ensure that you will be allocated a room in a hall of residence. If you are an ERASMUS student, you will find further information at our ERASMUS Office.
Student halls of residence (for non-exchange students)
If you wish to rent a room in a hall of residence, but are NOT coming to Giessen on an exchange program, you must submit your application directly to Student Affairs (the Studentenwerk), which has at its disposal accommodation for over 2,500 students in 10 halls of residence and apartment buildings spread throughout Giessen, Fulda, and Friedberg.
When applying for a place in a hall of residence, you must submit the following documents to Student Affairs:
a Halls Application (Wohnheimantrag; available on the Student Affairs website)
proof of student status at JLU or your Confirmation of Admission
a copy of your I.D. or passport
For freshly arriving students, the "Social" section of Student Affairs offers a special Service Dossier.
Please keep in mind, when planning your arrival in Giessen, that non-program students can only move in to the halls of residence on weekdays (Monday to Friday). Hall keys are handed out by the Housing division of Student Affairs.
Private apartments and rooms:
If you choose the option of an apartment or room on the open market, the print and online editions of Giessen's local newspapers contain listings:
The Classifieds appear in the Friday edition of the Giessen dailies ("Allgemeine" and "Anzeiger"), and there are corresponding listings in "Maz" on Wednesdays and the "Express" every Thursday. In almost all of the main hallways, cafeterias, and restaurants of the University, you will find informal postings on the walls advertising rooms, apartments, and shared apartments to rent.
Further information on accommodation that may prove of value to you can be found at www.casaswap.com.
