Humans share cities with many pigeons. They form their own communities but have a history of domestication. Currently, humans often treat them with violence and neglect. They are seen as pests, while they are our neighbors, to whom we have a duty of care. On this afternoon, we explore alternatives in theory and practice, philosophy and art. We present a short lecture about deliberation with pigeons and continue with a screening of the short film ‘Bericht van de duif’ by G.C. Heemskerk and Shani Leseman. We conclude with an open discussion.

Eva Meijer is a philosopher, visual artist, writer and singer-songwriter. They write novels, philosophical essays, academic texts, poems and columns, and their work has been translated into over twenty languages. Meijer is currently a Planetary Fellow at the Panel on Planetary Thinking, working on multispecies assemblies.

G.C. Heemskerk does not believe in the idea of the autonomous artist; everything you do you do together with someone. They collaborate with more-than-human animals, plants, fictional characters, and (living) humans. Their work spans drawing and painting, audio, video, and performance, and always takes the form of storytelling.

Both are active in the Multispecies Collective - a group of human and nonhuman artists - and intend this event to give something back to Giessen's pigeons.
