History of the BION

History of the BION
In 2000, the IGPP provided Prof. Dr. Dieter Vaitl with seven million DM from funds of the Holler Foundation for the purchase of a magnetic resonance tomograph (MRT) and for its accommodation in a new building of about 400 square meters. In 2005, the building was extended by an upper floor, so that 800 square metres are now available.

The research focus in the first 10 years was on the neuronal correlates of emotional processes, phenomena of altered states of consciousness, learning and attention processes and pain processing. The research work covered both basic research and clinically applied research (e.g. on anxiety disorders).
The BION today
In 2012, Prof. Dr. Rudolf Stark took over the office of Executive Director from Prof. Dr. Dieter Vaitl and BION was organisationally anchored in the Department 06 Psychology and Sports Sciences.

In 2014, the BION put a 3 Tesla Siemens Prism Scanner into operation, which was financed by the German Research Foundation (DFG), by the State of Hesse, and the Justus Liebig University of Giessen. As part of the Department 06 Psychology and Sports Sciences, the BION is available to all working groups of the department. Although the research work of the individual research groups differs greatly in their questions, they are united by their interest in understanding the neurobiological basis of psychological processes on their brain physiological basis.
