K. Allison Hammer, PhD, will give a talk entitled “America’s Holy War Against Transgender Communities.” They will discuss the current anti-trans moral and sex panic in the United States, which has resulted in widespread legislation, book banning, and viral disinformation campaigns. Continuing with themes from their upcoming book, Masculinity in Transition, Hammer proposes that while this panic appears to be a new phenomenon, it is a historically rooted panic that began in the postwar period, as evidenced by similarities in tactics used then and now. Further, Hammer asserts that from the mid-twentieth century forward, the need for total American economic and military domination has required the policing of the gender binary and control over the population’s reproductive capacities.
