"Border Imaginaries, Symbolic Borders, and Metaphors in Images of Migration – The Australian Case"
This presentation analyses how visual metaphors construct border imaginaries and shape migration discourse, using visual examples from Germany and Australia. Building on Olson and Wessel's work, I examine how images portray migrants - from anonymous masses to victims to empowered individuals - revealing how visual narratives construct and perpetuate specific understandings of human mobility. My findings demonstrate how shared visual patterns transcend national contexts to shape both public understanding and policy responses, highlighting the crucial role of media organisations in constructing the symbolic boundaries that define migration debates.
Janina Schlüsselburg is a PhD candidate at the University of New South Wales. Her research investigates media representations of migration across Australian, German, and U.S. American digital platforms and examines how migration imagery functions as affective artefacts. Through a critical lens, she explores how narrative patterns in Global North media perpetuate neo-colonial gatekeeping practices. Her research advocates for a shift beyond traditional portrayals, amplifying agency of individuals depicted in migration imagery. She is an affiliated member of the DFG research group Human Rights Discourse in Migration Societies (MeDiMi) and the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) at Justus Liebig University Giessen.
