Short Biography

Prof. Dr. Gerald Siegmund studied theatre studies, English, and Romance languages at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. In 1994, he earned his doctorate with a dissertation on Theatre as Memory.

Between 1998 and 2005, he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies at Justus Liebig University Giessen, where he also completed his habilitation. His habilitation thesis was published under the title Absence: A Performative Aesthetics of Dance by transcript. From 2005 to 2008, he was an assistant professor at the Institute for Theatre Studies at the University of Bern, Switzerland, until he was appointed to the Professorship for Choreography and Performance at the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies in 2009. Since January 2012, he has held the Professorship in Applied Theatre Studies there.

Gerald Siegmund has also worked extensively as a journalist and critic for various newspapers and journals, primarily in the fields of dance and experimental theatre. His areas of focus include contemporary theatre and contemporary dance, theatre theory, performance, intermediality, and the diverse intersections of theatre with other arts.
