Feminist Politics in Neoliberal Times: A Public Dialogue  Verónica Gago (Buenos Aires) in conversation with Zeynep Gambetti (Istanbul), chaired by Veronika Zablotsky (Gießen)

When? 4-6pm CET on March 11, 2022 


 

Zeynep Gambetti and Verónica Gago, two foremost critical theorists of (post-)neoliberal transformations and collective acts of resistance today, will stage a much anticipated public dialogue on feminist politics in neoliberal times as part of the virtual lecture series Transnational and Intersectional Critiques of Power. Based in Turkey and Argentina, respectively, they will discuss how transnational feminist, queer and trans*, worker, landless, student, and activist mobilizations around the world are confronting "conditions where the popular fabric is confronted with increasingly fast-paced and violent dispossessive, extractive, and expulsive logics" (Gago). What new forms of organizing and political action have emerged from densely interconnected sites of struggle throughout the Americas, Europe, and the wider Middle East? What are the disruptive and constituent capacities of transnational feminism(s) today?

 

ZEYNEP GAMBETTI completed her Ph.D. at the University of Paris in 1999 and served as an Associate Professor of Politics at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul until September 2019. Her work focuses on collective agency, ethics, and public space. She has carried out extensive research on the transformation of the conflict between the Turkish state and the Kurdish movement, with particular emphasis on space as a vector of relationality. Amongst several theoretical articles and book chapters on Hannah Arendt's political thought and subjectivity, she co-edited the anthologies Rhetorics of Insecurity: Belonging and Violence in the Neoliberal Era (with Marcial Godoy-Anativia, NYU Press, 2013) and Vulnerability in Resistance: Politics, Feminism, Theory (with Judith Butler and Leticia Sabsay, Duke University Press, 2016). She is a member of the International Consortium of Critical Theory Programs and part of the editorial collective of the peer-reviewed journal Critical Theory.

 

VERÓNICA GAGO teaches Political Science at the Universidad de Buenos Aires and is Professor of Sociology at the Instituto de Altos Estudios, Universidad Nacional de San Martín. She is also Assistant Researcher at the National Council of Research (CONICET) in Argentina. Gago is the author of Neoliberalism from Below: Popular Pragmatics and Baroque Economies (Tinta Limón 2014, Duke University Press, 2017) and of numerous articles published in journals and books throughout Latin America, Europe and the US. She is a member of the independent radical collective press Tinta Limón. She was part of the militant research experience Colectivo Situaciones and is a leading member of Ni Una Menos, a feminist political movement that started in Argentina in 2015.

Mission Statement

The research section “Transnational and Intersectional Critiques of Power” is a space for junior and mid-career scholars to explore transnational and intersectional critiques of power and inequality in societal areas such as care work and labor, education and pedagogy, health and reproductive rights, queerness and sexuality, family and parenthood, justice, migration, decolonization, democracy, and socio-ecological transformation. Thus, the section proves an interdisciplinary home for scholarly collaborations and exchanges that center relations of power and domination in local and global perspective. 

As its central concern, the section aims to gather its members and interlocutors through academic convenings (such as conferences, lectures, and workshops) that support the professional development of its members, for example through day-long symposia for members to present and discuss their research. Furthermore, members of this section come together in reading circles on a regular and ad hoc basis to discuss select scholarly publications that pertain to their interests.
