Society, Crisis, Resistance

Mission Statement

The “Society, Crisis, Resistance” section provides doctoral and postdoctoral researchers with an interdisciplinary forum in which to study contemporary processes of social transformation. It is based on the idea that crises reveal existing power relations, intensify political conflicts, and give rise to new forms of collective action, as well as marking phases of social destabilisation. Consequently, protests, social movements and civil society initiatives are not merely reactions to crises, but central forms of democratic debate and social innovation.

The section examines the emergence, dynamics and resolution of social conflicts in political, social, economic, cultural and technological terms. It focuses on challenges such as democratic crises, authoritarianism, social inequality, migration, climate change, digitalisation and artificial intelligence, and their impact on political participation, the public sphere and resistance. Particular attention is paid to the normative prerequisites of democratic societies, the conditions for collective agency and the potential for social transformation in a context of global interdependence.

The section sees itself as a forum for academic discussion, theoretical reflection, and collaborative research. It brings together political theory with the perspectives of sociology, history, cultural studies, law and media studies, promoting exchange between different methodological and disciplinary approaches. The section aims to support early-career researchers in conducting independent research, developing shared research questions, and initiating international collaborations. In this way, the section creates a space in which innovative research on society, crisis and resistance can flourish whilst reflecting on the social responsibility of academic knowledge.
