Efficiency of phosphorus uptake by durum wheat

To investigate the influence of root excretion (carboxylates) on the phosphorus uptake efficiency of durum wheat, preliminary trials are currently being carried out at the Institute of Plant Nutrition. This involves a diverse set of 18 genotypes of Mediterranean origin, which includes modern durum wheat varieties as well as old genotypes and landraces. In addition to the obvious differences in habit and biomass formation, we expect significant differences in phosphorus utilization efficiency and uptake strategies, which we can then use to investigate the underlying processes and to establish new methods of quantifying them.
