Incoming Students

Incoming Students,

We are thrilled to hear you are considering an exchange at JLU Giessen. Here is everything you need to know on scholarship, social services, etc.:

  • You can study at JLU Giessen with a grant provided by the Erasmus+ worldwide credit mobility programme of the European Union for up to 12 months per study cycle (BA, MA, PhD). 24 Erasmus months are provided for students in study programmes with just one study cycle, e.g. students of law, veterinary medicine, human medicine, dentistry, teaching degrees, who sit a state examination after 4-5 years of study. These months can be freely divided into periods of study abroad and internships abroad. Even repeated stays abroad are possible. Altogether, you could stay at JLU Giessen with a grant for as long as 36 months, including your PhD studies.
  • Study abroad for 3-6 months
  • No study fees at JLU
  • Recognition of academic studies in Giessen by your home institution (please check with your study abroad advisor at your home university).
  • Erasmus+ Scholarship Top up: The top up is applicable for students who fall under one of these categories – first university graduate in the family, employment in accordance with the requirements of the NA-DAAD, degree of disability of at least 20 or chronic illness with additional living costs abroad or an economic disadvantage (e.g. not fulfilling the visa requirements of 992€). The top up of 250€ is paid monthly with your scholarship. Please contact mobility@admin.uni-giessen.de for further questions and information on how to apply.    
  • Additional travel costs for sustainable travel: If you are planning to travel to Giessen sustainably and your university is within the first four distance bands, please reach out to us (mobility@admin.uni-giessen.de) for further information. Travelling sustainable means for example bus, train or car sharing. Flying is not considered sustainable travel.
  • Grants:

Studying with a disability:
You can find further information on JLU’s offer on tools, extra work spaces etc. on the website of our counselling for students with a disability. Please feel free to reach out to our International Office (mobility@admin.uni-giessen.de) if you want to put in touch with a counsellor directly – no problem.

Compensation for disadvantages: Studying with dyslexia, needing more time for your exams due to a medical condition? JLU has got your back. You can find further information on the possibility of compensation (also in English) here. The application has to be made at least one month in advance to your exam – if this applies to you, please reach out to mobility@admin.uni-giessen.de early on.

Psychological Counselling: A semester abroad can be challenging. Nevertheless your circumstances, JLU offers psychological counselling for all students. You can either reach out to our Centre for Competence Development and book an appointment easily via QR code or check the opening consultation hours from our Student Council with a licensed therapist here.

Social Advisory for Students by our Student Services: Travelling with a child, needing financial guidance or questions about finding accommodation? Our student services offers advisory for students. Please also inform us (mobility@admin.uni-giessen.de) if you are travelling with your family or reach out to us if you want us to put you in contact.
