Overview
The degree programme is aimed at students from German Studies Bachelor's programmes and teacher training graduates who have studied German for at least 40 CP and teaches skills that are relevant to the field of German as a second and foreign language in non-school and school settings.
Composition of the Study Programme

Students who are studying for a Master's degree after having previously completed a teacher training course in German can have their practical school studies (e.g. basic internship and practical semester) recognised for the internship module in this Master's degree course. In this case, the study period is reduced to three semesters.

Composition of the Study Programme
The degree programme consists of 8 mandatory modules:
- Basics of German as a second and foreign language (10 CP)
- Learning contexts & learning objects (10 CP)
- Writing, text, culture & society (10 CP)
- Evaluating language skills (10 CP)
- Teaching and promoting language skills (10 CP)
- Researching and evaluating lessons (10 CP)
- Internship(30 CP) [1]
- Thesis Module (30 CP)
The study programme plan provides you with information on planning your studies. Advice is offered on the choice of specialisation and extracurricular modules in particular.

[1] For applicants with a first state examination in German, the internship module can be replaced by a proven basic internship and internship semester totalling at least 30 CP.

Admission requirements
Admission to the Master's degree programme requires a Bachelor's degree obtained at a university in Germany or abroad or a comparable qualification comprising at least 40 CP modules from the subject German (B. Ed.) / German Studies (B. A.) / German Linguistics (B. A.) / German Philology (B. A.).
The completed degree programmes
- Teaching degree programme at primary schools (L1, long subject German),
- Teaching degree programme at Hauptschulen, Realschulen and Gesamtschulen (L2), Teaching degree programme at grammar schools (L3),
- Teaching degree programme for special needs education (L5)
- and Teaching degree programme at vocational schools (vocational and in-company training, L4)
are also recognised, provided that the teaching subject German (at least 40 CP) has been successfully completed with the First State Examination.
The previous degree must comprise at least 180 CP.
The Examination Board may recognise other degrees as equivalent following a case-by-case assessment.
Application / Enrolment
The degree programme is admission-free, no GPA requirements apply.

- 01 June 2025
Final deadline:
- for people with a Bachelor's degree in Germany: 01 September 2025
- for people with a Bachelor's degree obtained abroad: 15 August 2025
