The academic study of Slavic languages, literatures and cultures – this is at the heart of Slavic studies. You combine perspectives from linguistics, literary and cultural studies with a strong focus on practical language skills. Partnerships with universities in Poland and Ukraine, as well as an internship or project, will open up international and career opportunities for you.

What can I expect from this programme?
On the Bachelor’s degree programme in Slavic Studies, you will acquire a sound grounding in linguistics, cultural studies and literary studies, as well as proficiency in your chosen Slavic languages. You will also gain a comprehensive insight into the history, structure and distribution of this language.
The degree programme aims to adapt tried-and-tested content, structures, language and practical components to meet future-oriented knowledge and skills requirements. Alongside the thematic focus on literature, culture and language, practical language training is of particular importance. The programme also includes an internship or project, which can be used to develop one’s professional profile and prepare students for the world of work.
How is the programme structured?
The study programme is composed of:
- a major in Slavic Studies (120 CP)
- a minor (40 CP)
- an internship or project to prepare for professional activities (10 CP)
- the Bachelor's thesis (10 CP)
Slavic Studies Major
The major Slavic Studies deals with literary and cultural studies as well as linguistics. The aspect of practical language training is of particular importance.
The major is composed of two Slavic languages:
- The first Slavic language must be chosen before the start of the programme, at the latest when enrolling. You can choose the following languages:
- Russian Studies/Russian
- Polish Studies/Polish
- Bohemistics/Czech
- The second Slavic language must be chosen for the third semester. You can choose the following languages:
- Polish Studies/Polish
- Bohemistics/Czech
- Ukrainian Studies/Ukrainian
- Southern Slavistics/Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian
Combination rules:
Subjects of the same name cannot be combined. If Polish Studies/Polish or Bohemistics/Czech is chosen as the first Slavic language, then Russian Studies/Russian must be taken as the second Slavic language.
Minor
The following minor subjects are offered:

What career paths can I pursue after graduation?
The programme qualifies students for a wide range of professional fields such as business, publishing, public employers, the media, etc.
The exact areas of activity depend on the individual specialisation undertaken by the students. Nonetheless, it is possible to identify the following fields of activity: communication, further training, and the cultural sector. These include:
- journalism and publishing/ radio, broadcast and television/ editing
- librarianship, documentation, information technology
- adult education/ civic education (adult education centre, trade unions, employer's associations/ boards, parties, charities, churches)
- associations (boards, organisations, parties, charities, parliamentary services)
- press- and public relations activities (for parties, associations, public or semi-public institutions, radio, broadcast and television)
- higher education institution and other research institutes
- private schools
- tourism (sector)/ leisure sector
- opinion research
- social services/ non-profit organisations
- theatre and all its disciplines/ cultural sector: (trade) fairs and markets
- visual arts/ museums/ collections/ exhibitions
- international organisations/ cultural exchange
- career guidance/ counselling
Application and Enrolment
Requirements
A valid university entrance qualification (German: HZB) is required for admission to the program.
- From Germany: General university entrance qualification (= Abitur or equivalent), vocational university entrance qualification, master craftsman’s certificate, university entrance qualification for professionally qualified individuals.
- From abroad: You can find out whether the university entrance qualification from your home country qualifies you for direct admission to a degree program in Germany on the information portal for the recognition of foreign educational qualifications (anabin).
Proof of an internship (pre-internship) is not required for admission.
Applicants with a foreign university entrance qualification should also note the required proof of German language proficiency.
