Overview
Agriculture and also environmental protection are becoming increasingly digital. Applied informatics is used to analyse, evaluate and optimise primary agricultural production and its impact on the environment. Major ecological and economic challenges are at stake. How can resources be used efficiently and thus conserved? How can environmental protection and value creation be reconciled? How can the quality of food be increased through precise technologies? How can we meet our social responsibility and do business sustainably with the help of innovative IT solutions? This is where IT talents with digital competence are needed.
The Master's programme in Information Technology in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences combines the basic knowledge specific to agriculture and the environment from the Bachelor's programme with broad training in computer applications. The programme is aimed at students who enjoy computer science and are open-minded about digitalisation and modern agriculture. You have already acquired basic knowledge of agricultural and environmental sciences through your Bachelor's degree and you want to contribute to sustainable, digitised agriculture and use the digital components of environmental sciences to safeguard natural resources.
You can find more information about the admission requirements under the tab "Application".
You will learn to analyse data, create predictive models, simulate processes and use large amounts of data for optimisation with the help of new technologies.
Teaching and research is conducted in the areas of:
- Geoinformation systems
- Precision Farming
- remote sensing
- Big Data and Data Sciences
- Computer-aided planning of breeding programmes in plant and animal breeding

Composition of degree programme
The course of studies is composed of 20 modules:
- 8 core modules (mandatory) with in each case 6 credit points,
- 8 specialisation modules (non-mandatory) with in each case 6 credit points,
- a written Master's thesis (equivalent to 4 modules = 24 credit points).
Half the taught modules are mandatory (core modules) the other half of the modules can be selected from all the courses offered by the department or partially by other departments in the JLU (specialisation modules).
Specialisation is possible through the selection of the profile modules. The course of study has been successfully completed when all modules have been successfully passed.Modules
- Applied Statistics
- GIS-Project for Landscape Structure Analysis
- Spatial Data Analysis
- Smart Farming
- Information Technology I
- Information Technology II
- Basics of Programming with Python
- Introduction to Databases
By choosing certain profile modules, the following specialisations shown in the Master's certificate can be acquired:
- IT in plant breeding
- IT in animal breeding
- IT in Agricultural Economics
- IT in landscape ecology

Professional fields
Information technology now plays an important role in the agricultural and environmental sciences. Career opportunities arise, for example, in data analysis in plant protection or fertilisers, in automated data collection procedures on combine harvesters or other agricultural machinery. Potential employers include service providers for breeding, production and marketing in agriculture. Within the environmental sciences, occupational fields can be found in the area of remote sensing by means of geographical information systems, which build on environmental science principles and data science, or as environmental officers in companies, research institutes, universities and authorities.
